Kenisha E. Anthony kept falling through the cracks of the foster care system to the point that she felt like a burden to everyone and experienced suicidal thoughts.

Kenisha didn’t want other youth in foster care to fall through the cracks as she did, so she returned as a caseworker to the same system that failed to protect her.

Working for the system opened Kenisha’s eyes up even more to all that needs to change — so much so that she wrote a book about her journey to help catalyze that change.

Kenisha E. Anthony is a first-generation college graduate; award-winning foster care advocate; and author of the memoir Labeled: Ward of the State.

Kenisha is an outspoken activist utilizing her experiences as a former foster youth and foster care professional to empower others. As a foster care visionary, she starred in the documentary Foster Shock (video below) and has been featured by NPR and the Miami Herald.

Her book is teeming with vulnerability, candor, and wisdom and is an unfiltered reflection of Kenisha’s life. More than a memoir, it is a story that demands a change in us and our communities and begins to lay the groundwork for that change to occur.
